Interests

Sports

I play a bit of football (I would say I am more enthusiastic than skilled) and a bit of Ultimate Frisbee. I have played for a variety of frisbee teams and currently play with the Norwich team, Norwich Ultimate.

Photography

I enjoy taking photos in my spare time. I have a bulky but effective digital camera but subscribe to the view that it's the photographer not the camera that's important.

These are a selection of my photos:

White lighthouse on a clifftop under a blue sky Clifftop path and railings leading to a lighthouse Close-up of pale green succulent rosettes Mountain ridge rising above dark moorland Waterfall flowing past mossy boulders Red hot poker flowers in front of a formal garden Big cat yawning on a rock Windmill on the horizon under a brown sky Tyre tracks in sand Bare tree above boats moored on a river, in black and white Heron perched on a wooden post over water Geese flying in a line across a pale sky Snowy street with parked cars, in black and white Fairground carousel blurred in motion at dusk Gulls on an old wooden boat on a shingle beach, in black and white Two biplanes with wing walkers in flight Jellyfish glowing blue in dark water Builders on the scaffolding of a curved modern building Weathered yellow can washed up on a beach Reeds against a hazy sky Silhouette of a bare tree against a yellow sky Busker playing guitar in a lit doorway

Technology

Usability. My PhD was originally intended to be about making information technology more functional for the blind. Although my research, in the end, focussed more on pure psychology, I'm still interested in making technology more useful and accessible. I still get annoyed by mobile phones or gadgets that you can't just pick up and use, or websites that hide the information you're looking for!

Web authoring. I do a bit of web authoring when I have time, which I also enjoy. When I discovered CSS I created my first website by hand. You can see what it looked like on the site history page.

AI and teaching tools. I build tools for teaching and learning, and I do research on AI. See AI in education.
